Basketball Fun

Tonight I played ward basketball. The first game I did ok, I made 2 points and quite a few rebounds. We won that game 47-25. My main job was to get in the way of their best player.
I had the same job in the 2nd game. While I was out the main player made about 10 points, in 5 minutes. While I was in the main player made 3 points, one of those was because I fouled her on the shot and she made one of her shots. So even though we didn't win, I did a good job keeping her away from the ball.
The other fun thing reminded me of my brother Mike, if I remember right he said that if you don't foul, you weren't really playing. I only had 2 fouls, one was the one I already mentioned, and the other was kind of a clothesline. It was cool.
We play again tomorrow night and then the regional tournament is the 2nd weekend in March, and we know we're in it already.

Happy Working Song

This song was nominated for an Oscar (maybe 2) and it reminded me of how funny the lyrics are, so I thought I'd put them on here to be enjoyed. Some of my favorite words are in italics.

Happy Working Song

Come my little friends as we all sing a happy little working song
Merry little voices clear and strong
Come and roll your sleeves up - so to speak - and pitch in
Cleaning crud up in the kitchen as we sing along
Trill a cheery tune in the tub as we scrub a stubborn mildew stain
Pluck a hairball from the shower drain to that gay refrain of a happy working song
We'll keep singing without fail - otherwise we'd spoil it
Hosing down the garbage pail and scrubbing up the toilet - ooh!
How we enjoy letting loose with a little ladadumdumdum!
While we're emptying the vacu-um it's such fun to hum a happy working song - ooh! -
A happy working song
Oh how strange a place to be
'till Edward comes for me, my heart is sighing
Still, as long as I am here I guess a new experience could be worth trying
Hey! Keep drying!
You can do a lot when you've got such a happy working tune to hum
While you're sponging up the soapy scum
We adore each filthy chore that we determine
So friends, even though you're vermin, we're all happy working (Dum)
Singing as we fetch the detergent box for the smelly shirts and the stinky socks
Sing along
If you can not sing then hum along
As we're finishing our happy working song!

Tomato Knife

As I was growing up my mom had a knife that we called the tomato knife. It was tiny and flimsy, and would only cut tomatoes. A few years ago my parents gave me and Karl a set of knifes. In the set is a paring knife, a peeler and a tomato knife. It is kind of funny because Karl doesn't really like to cook, but he doesn't seem to mind cutting up tomatoes, ever since he realized how great the tomato knife is. Thanks Mom and Dad.

Random Thoughts

I have been thinking random thoughts this evening, so I thought I would share them.

I sure have a great family.
Darn, the Jazz are loosing.
I would enjoy a peanut butter cup sundae right now. But not only is it after 9:00, I don't want to work off all those calories.
I'm proud of Della and Chris for being so good at what they do.
I hope my presentation goes well.
My toes are cold.
I should go to bed.
I don't want to go to bed yet.
Did I turn off the oven?
Oh good.
I hope I have a similar outlook on life as my dad has when it's my 64th birthday.
My toes are really cold.
I should put on thicker socks.
I need to clean off my desk.
I hope Lydia's kids get better soon.
I'm going to go cuddle with Karl now.
I hope everyone enjoyed a small insight into my mind.

My Sister-in-law's quilt

I finally took pictures of the quilt I made and sold to my Sister-in-law. She has an outdoor theme in her home, so I chose Deer and leaves. She loved it.

Cars: The Movie, or the game?

My son Kaleb is having a lot of fun with the cars we bought him. They are basically action figures for the cars movie. We knew he was having fun with them, then we bought Mater, so he had all the main characters. Now it is fun to watch him play with them, he acts out scenes from the movie. It is fun to see how well he knows scenes from the movie.

Presentation

Today I was supposed to do a presentation in one of my classes. I had stressed about it for a lot of the week and spent some frantic time this morning getting everything ready. I got to class and our teacher announced that since the audio-visual equipment is down (just for today, they were doing some building wide maintenance on it) our presentation is next week instead.
While it is kind of nice to know I have everything done for the presentation and I'll only have to do it next week is nice. But I was really looking forward to having it done. Oh well.

Lego Display Case

Karl really likes Legos and has a pretty good collection of them. This is the display case we got for him to put some of them in.

Good Week

Well, this week has definitely been better than last week. Von is over the chicken pox. That alone makes this week better.
Karl was taking a really stressful class for his Master's program. He finished it on Saturday. WHOOO HOOOO!!!! For the past 5 weeks he has had school 4 nights a week (in addition to work everyday). When he wasn't at school, he was doing homework. I'm really glad that class is over.
On Saturday we celebrated his class being over by going to the temple. I haven't gone in longer than I want to admit, and it was great. I love the peace I feel there.
Sunday: Grandma came over to watch the boys. Karl and I went to spend the night away from home.
Monday: My boys and I went to the Monte Bean Museum, then up to Ikea. We got a lego display case for Karl's legos. He has been wanting one for a long time and we finally found one we both like.
Tuesday: Laundry and school.
Wednesday: Played with my boys!
Life is good.

Prevention that didn't prevent

A couple weeks ago I noticed that my bedroom door has a doorknob meant for an outside door (so it has a key hole instead of a round hole to push a nail through). I noticed this because Kaleb liked to go in my room and shut and lock the door. At that point I would tell him to unlock the door and in the midst of giggles he would.
I realized that it was possible that sometime he could lock the door and then something would happen so he couldn't unlock it (such as getting hurt). So, after trying all the keys I had in the lock I took the handle out of the door, to a locksmith. He re-keyed it and I put it back in. So the next time he locked the door I got out my apartment key and unlocked it.
Fast forward to this evening. Kaleb was being crazy and running around the house. I heard a door slam and little feet running. Kaleb had locked his bedroom door, and then shut it, from the outside. No problem right? Wrong. His bedroom door also has a keyed lock instead of the kind that has a hole for a nail to unlock it.
I called my landlord and told her my predicament and asked her if she knew a locksmith. She said to go ahead and call one. When I asked if I could just take the cost out of my rent she hesitated and said she didn't think she was responsible for that since it was my son who locked the door. I responded that although that was true I should have been given all the keys to the apartment when I moved in, (thanks Lydia).
To make the rest of the conversation short: her son is coming over tomorrow with a drill and a new doorknob, one that will open with a nail. :)

Chicken Pox= Going Crazy

Von has the Chicken Pox. He started showing them on Friday. So, with the exception of about one time out of the house each day, I have been home since then. I'm ready for him to get better. He is past the hurting stage, we're just making sure that all of the pox have scabbed over before we go somewhere. We have been using the last 3 days for potty-training, and Kaleb has done really well. So hopefully it will continue that way and he'll start going on his own soon.

Elections

I have often wished for something that would tell me what the different candidates for president think about specific topics, not just what they choose to talk about. I found a cool website that you can choose 2 candidates and compare them side by side. There is also a candidate selector that asks you how you feel on the issues and tells you which candidates are closest to being the same. If you would like to see it, this is the site: http://selectsmart.com/president/2008/comparethem.html

New Prophet

This past week has reminded me of something that happened in 1995. Late one night I was talking to Lydia and I said something about President Hunter. I had grown up remembering only President Benson and then he died and President Hunter became prophet. He had been prophet for more than 8 months, but I hadn't really connected to him. I didn't feel like he was a prophet.
I explained that to Lydia and she told me some things about President Hunter. I don't really remember what she told me except that he played the saxaphone and used to play it on a cruise ship. Since I was in the band at school that gave me a connection to him. After talking about him for awhile I went to my room and prayed that I would know he was the prophet. I was told that he was.
Later that week I went to seminary and as soon as I entered the seminary building I heard the sad news that President Hunter had died. I was so glad that I had a testimony of him and that I hadn't waited longer to pray for that testimony.
As soon as President Hinckley was set apart as the prophet I prayed about him and felt that same testimony that he was called by God to be our prophet.
Today as I heard the announcement that President Monson was the new prophet I immediately felt that same peace. I'm grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who answers prayers and has given us a living prophet on the earth once again to testify of him and of our Savior.

The last post- continued

Yesterday Karl made an interesting comment to me. This is how the conversation went:
Carrie, will you promise me something?
What?
Never to wear those pants in public.
Why?
They are way too big.
Ok.

Today we had a similar conversation about a different pair of pants. After I agreed to not wear them again I pointed out that I have 2 less pairs of pants to wear, that means I'll need to go shopping. He said that sounds like a good idea to him.
It's nice to have a husband that is so supportive of me.

Pre-Mission Weight

Well, as of today I am below my pre-mission weight. I'm actually not sure exactly what it was, but I know it was more than I am now. In the past I have been discouraged when getting out clothes from the past, they haven't fit when I was ready for them to. I've been putting off getting them out because of that. Today I decided to try on one of the sweaters from before my mission. It is a sweater that I also wore one of the first times Karl noticed me. It fits well. WHOOO HOOOO!!!!
